Зауважання такі:

1) Quote “The absolute majority of the population of the United States (from the presidents to the enslaved African-Americans at the plantations of the South) created and participated in that nation-wide religious revival which embraced the entire country.”

Рецензент написав: If this is true, it needs a source citation. I don’t think it is, though. Religious revivals – they were multiple and different, not just one – were persistent and widespread, and their historic influence is important, but I don’t believe most of the population participated.

The reviewer is completely wrong:

Quote #1 — In part because religion was separated from the control of political leaders, a series of religious REVIVALS swept the United States from the 1790s and into the 1830s that transformed the religious landscape of the country. Known today as the SECOND GREAT AWAKENING, this spiritual resurgence fundamentally altered the character of American religion(http://www.ushistory.org/us/22c.asp)

Quote #2 — There is no country in the world where the Christian religion retains a greater influence over the souls of men than in America, and there can be no greater proof of its utility and of its conformity to human nature than that its influence is powerfully felt over the most enlightened and free nation of the earth... (Alexis de Tocqueville)

But the second remark is even better))

“Along with the head of the National Endowment for the Humanities Lynne Cheney and William John Bennett (who served as the Secretary of Education and an adviser of President Reagan), Crews actively participated in the process of reformation of the national system of higher education, initiated by the Federal government in the 1970s.” This is garbled. You’re thinking of efforts that began in the ‘80s, under Reagan, since which time there have been a number of movements or waves of education reform, not all of them pushing in the same direction. It’s a complicated story which, in any case, is beside the point here because it did not concern higher education, but primary and secondary education, and it would not have had much if any influence on the direction of professional Hawthorne scholarship.

Once again, this is wrong.

1)  Wiki ain't a good source, but...

«Cheney served as the sixth Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities from 1986 to 1993. In 1995, she founded American Council of Trustees and Alumni, a think tank devoted to reforming higher education

2) Убивча цитата))
