WW2 - Heroes of Ukraine

Marshal of Aviation Ivan Nykytovych Kozhedub (Russian: Иван Никитович Кожедуб; June 8, 1920 — August 8, 1991) was a Soviet military aviator and a World War II fighter ace. He is credited with 64 individual air victories. He was made a Hero of the Soviet Union on three occasions (4 February 1944; 19 August 1944; 18 August 1945).

He was born in the village of Obrazhiivka, a settlement in the Sumy region (Ukraine), during the wartime period between the Ukrainian People's Republic and Soviet Ukraine.

Alexander Ivanovich Marinesko (Russian: Александр Иванович Маринеско) (January 15, 1913 — November 25, 1963) was a Soviet naval officer and, during World War II, the captain of the S-13 submarine, which sank the German ship Wilhelm Gustloff (one of the biggests ships of German Navy), with recent research showing that over 9,000 died when the ship sank.

He was born and lived in Odessa, Ukraine.

Sydir Artemovych Kovpak (Ukrainian: Сидір Артемович Ковпак; Russian: Си́дор Арте́мьевич Ковпа́к, Sidor Artemyevich Kovpak), June 7, 1887 – December 11, 1967) was a prominent Soviet partisan leader in Ukraine. Kovpak was born to a poor peasant family in Ukrainian village in Kharkov Governorate.
